Dallas Police Department (DPD) Traffic Practice Exam

The primary focus of task 1 in phase 2 of a traffic stop evaluation is the interview and observation of the driver. This step is crucial as it allows the officer to assess the driver's behavior, demeanor, and overall responses during the conversation. By engaging the driver in dialogue, the officer can gather vital information that may indicate whether additional evaluation, such as sobriety testing, is necessary. Observing the driver's physical cues, such as their ability to articulate responses, eye contact, and any signs of nervousness or impairment, also plays a significant role in making informed decisions throughout the stop.

While the other tasks, such as checking for sobriety tests, observing passengers, and reviewing traffic violations, are important components of a complete traffic stop evaluation, they follow the initial interview and observation phase. The foundational understanding gained during the first interaction strongly influences the officer's next steps and decisions during the traffic stop.
